A sensitive restoration and refurbishment programme was necessary to this property. The house, over a prolonged period, had become extremely run down with many original features removed. The internal spaces were tight and circulation within the property was very limiting. The client presented the house to ourselves as a blank canvas – to restore and expand as we saw appropriate. When exploring the property, it became apparent there was very limited access from the interior spaces to the garden.
The brief fell into place with the introduction of an oversized family and living space tentatively attached to the rear of the property. Opening the existing house onto the new extension allowed ‘semi-private’ spaces to be formed within the much larger open plan arrangement. To balance the property the roof space required converting – adding a further two decent sized bedrooms to the portfolio.
The property falls within the Chislehurst Conservation Area, pressing the further need for a sensitive restoration to this heritage, albeit adrift, property.
